SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS

Yediot Ahronot suggests that Egypt now faces the unpleasant prospect of Arab criticism if it uses force against the Palestinian influx from the Gaza Strip. The paper asserts that Israel, "must not continue to volunteer to deliver fuel or any other equipment to the Gaza Strip since Egypt can do so much better," and adds that since, "There are enemies in Gaza," Israel, "has a long-range interest in ending its ties with R11; and responsibility for R11; the Gaza Strip. This is, at last, the fruit of the disengagement. While terrorism is continuing, we are no longer responsible for the population." The editors venture that Hamas will not push the Egyptians too far because, "The Egyptians are not soft IsraelR30;Egypt has an Arab security establishment that is liable to be very brutal."

Ma'ariv believes that, "The terrorist attack in Dimona must teach us a lesson R11; releasing terrorists leads to murder," and notes that one of the terrorists was released from an Israeli prison in 2005. The editors recall that the two terrorists who were shot dead on 25.1.08 as they tried to stab students in Kfar Etzion had been released from prison only the week before and add that, "Even the parents of beloved soldier Shalit must understand that there is a moral boundary that cannot be crossed."

Makor Rishon-Hatzofeh refers to Winograd Committee member Prof. Yehezkel Dror's comments in support of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's peace policy and reminds its readers that the Committee, "decided R11; for legalistic reasons R11; not to draw personal conclusions or issue personal recommendations." The editors declare that, "There is no alternative to transferring the responsibility for drawing conclusions back to the people...via elections within a few months."
