ZAKA DELEGATION RESCUES 8 ALIVE FROM THE COLLAPSED PORT AU PRINCE UNIVERSITY BUILDING

AFTER 38 HOURS, THE ZAKA INTERNATIONAL RESCUE UNIT DELEGATION IN HAITI PULLED EIGHT STUDENTS ALIVE FROM THE COLLAPSED UNIVERSITY BUILDING ON SATURDAY
ZAKA delegation head: “You have to understand that the situation is true madness, and the more time passes, there are more and more bodies, in numbers that cannot be grasped. It is beyond comprehension.” It was a “Shabbat from hell” for the ZAKA International Rescue Unit delegation in Haiti. The six man ZAKA delegation (four from Israel and two from Mexico) had arrived in Haiti aboard a Mexican air force Hercules, immediately after completing their work in recovery and identification in the Mexico City helicopter crash. On arrival, the ZAKA delegation was dispatched to the collapsed 8-storey university building where cries could be heard from the trapped students. After 38 hours of work around the clock working with the Mexican military delegation and otehr Jewish volunteers from Mexico, the ZAKA volunteers succeeded Saturday in pulling eight students alive from the rubble. In a disturbing email that Mati Goldstein, head of the ZAKA International Rescue Unit delegation managed to send to the ZAKA headquarters in Jerusalem, he writes of the “Shabbat from hell. Everywhere, the acrid smell of bodies hangs in the air. It’s just like the stories we are told of the Holocaust – thousands of bodies everywhere. You have to understand that the situation is true madness, and the more time passes, there are more and more bodies, in numbers that cannot be grasped. It is beyond comprehension.” Amid the stench and chaos, the ZAKA delegation took time out to recite Shabbat prayers – a surreal sight of ultra-orthodox men wrapped in prayer shawls standing on the collapsed buildings. Many locals sat quietly in the rubble, staring at the men as they prayed facing Jerusalem. At the end of the prayers, they crowded around the delegation and kissed the prayer shawls. Due to the breakdown in communications in Haiti, the ZAKA delegation which arrived from Mexico was unable to make contact before Shabbat with the Israeli Home Front Command delegation that is now in Haiti.

ISRAAID MEDICAL TEAM TREATS INJURED IN PORT-AU-PRINCE HOSPITAL

The IsraAID medical team hit ground running. Just minutes after landing in the airport in Port-au-prince the IsraAID team was met by David Darg, Operation Blessing Director in the field and his staff and joined with them to unload a planeload of food and medical equipment. The Israeli medical professionals of IsraAID – F.I.R.S.T. traveled to the main Port-au-prince Hospital to start treating patients, joining local physicians at the site of the collapsed central hospital where thousands of wounded have gathered desperate for help. “The scenes in the hospital were horrible we saw people everywhere on the floors in the building and outside, people with amputations and bone-deep wounds, hundreds of them, the size of the catastrophe is unbelievable. All of the injured were treated until we came by only one local doctor and we were the first foreign backup team to operate in the hospital.” Said Nurse Sheva Cohen from Kibbutz Ein Yahav in the Negev. When the team arrived at the hospital they found most of the injured outside the building laying in beds in the building’s garden, probably out of fear of aftershocks and further collapse. The IsraAID team set up treatment rooms in four empty rooms, treating 60 patients with IV and administered medicine. While in the hospital, an infant with 60% burns died and bodies that had not yet been removed for burial were piled up in back. In the meantime, the logistical personnel remain in the airport area to set up camp and assist local NGO partners with logistical support for relief items that were continuing to land. Currently the teams are working around the clock to provide assistance to the injured. In light of the scale of the disaster, IsraAID is currently focused on expanding the scale of its operation, preparing an additional team that would be sent next week. IsraAID’s emergency response in Haiti is supported through the generous donations of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, American Jewish Committee, Bna’i B’rith International, and The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago in addition to other Federations in the North America.

IDF MEDICAL AND RESCUE TEAM HAS SET UP A FIELD HOSPITAL, BEGINNING TO RESCUE AND TREAT HUNDREDS

The IDF Medical and Rescue Team has arrived in Haiti, set up a field hospital in Port-Au-Prince and is beginning to treat patients there. In addition, the forces are locating and rescuing survivors trapped in ruined buildings, including many who were injured during the collapse of the UN headquarters. The field hospital is prepared to receive dozens of ambulances evacuating injured children from the different disaster struck areas. Between Friday night and Saturday, dozens of truckloads of medical and logistical equipment were unloaded and the field hospital set up. The Israeli delegation landed in the capital of Port-Au-Prince yesterday evening and has located itself in a soccer field near the air port. Upon arrival, C4I teams deployed communications infrastructure in preparations for the hospital’s establishment. Two teams, comprised of search and rescue personnel and canine operators from the IDF canine unit were sent out on rescue missions. The first team was sent to the Haiti UN headquarters in order to assist in rescuing survivors. The rescue teams are working in cooperation with local authorities in order to reach disaster struck areas where survivors can be located and assisted. The delegation is scheduled to stay in Haiti for a minimum of two weeks. Further stay will be assessed at the end of this period.

O hospital de campanha de Israel é o único com capacidade para efetuar cirurgias complexas e com tudo necessário a elas. Segundo a CNN, as outras missões no terreno têm transferido pacientes para o hospital do exército de Israel, porque têm falta de recursos e de apoio. O trabalho destas equipes de Israel têm tido uma cobertura internacional pelas suas atividades de assistência e desempenho na ajuda a todos os pacientes que lhes chegam. Parte dos hospitais de campanha de outras organizações somente têm capacidade para prestarem os primeiros socorros. A cadeia ABC louvou a missão Israelense por ter proporcionado através de um complicado procedimento, o nascimento de um bebê, o qual teve o nome de Israel. O reporter dessa cadeia americana é um médico e foi o primeiro na assistência no nascimento da criança, sem sucesso por falta de recursos, mas após dada autorização para transferirem a haitiana para o hospital de campanha do exército Israelita, aí sim, com sucesso. Agradeceu aos médicos Israelitas por aquele fato e expressou quanto são maravilhosos todos eles. O número de pacientes aguardando intervenção cirúrgica aumenta e coloca em pressão a capacidade humana dos Israelenses e das capacidades do seu hospital de campanha.

Em um momento surreal capturado pelas câmeras da ZAKA, dezenas de haitianos locais expressaram sua gratidão aos voluntários da equipe de resgate ZAKA que têm trabalhado arduamente desde a sua chegada na área do desastre na última sexta-feira. Todos cantaram “Heveinu Shalom Aleichem” em Hebraico. A chefe de operações da equipe de resgate ZAKA, Mati Goldstein, e o voluntário Dano Monkotavitz, ensinaram os locais a melodia e as palavras em hebraico e em conjunto, todos cantaram com muita emoção. Equipe de voluntarios da ZAKA auxuliam no resgate das vitimas no Haiti

O governo de Israel, através de suas forças de defesa e equipes voluntarias de resgate, está colaborando no resgate das vitimas do terremoto no Haiti. Veja abaixo:

Israel reforça sua delegação de ajuda humanitária no Haiti – Com o propósito de auxiliar a delegação que já se encontra em Porto Príncipe, uma delegação adicional da IDF está programada para partir para o Haiti durante a noite de hoje (18). A delegação será chefiada pelo Maj.gen. Yair Golan e incluirá também o Diretor-Geral do Ministério da Saúde, Dr. Eytan Chai-Am. A primeira delegação das Forças de Defesa de Israel (IDF) se instalou na capital do Haiti, Porto Príncipe, na última sexta-feira (15) e estabeleceu seu centro de operações e o hospital de campanha em um campo de futebol próximo ao aeroporto.

O hospital de campanha conta com 40 médicos, 25 enfermeiras, paramédicos, uma farmácia, uma enfermaria para crianças, um departamento de radiologia, uma unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI), uma sala de emergência, duas salas de cirurgia, um centro cirúrgico e uma maternidade. Além de todos os atendimentos realizados, cerca de 200 pacientes foram internados no hospital sendo que maioria deles está em estado moderado. Além disso, já foram realizadas 25 cirurgias de alto risco e três nascimentos, incluindo um bebê prematuro com 1,8 quilogramas.

Ontem (17), uma mulher haitiana grávida de oito meses chegou ao hospital de campanha das Forças de Defesa de Israel no país. Ela deu à luz um menino saudável, que recebeu o nome de Israel. Na tarde do último sábado (16), a equipe das Forças de Defesa de Israel (IDF) salvou um funcionário público haitiano, Sr. Gilles, de 58 anos, que estava soterrado haviam 90 horas. Este foi o primeiro salvamento da equipe Israelense no país de uma pessoa viva e o trabalho durou cerca de oito horas. Veja AQUI o vídeo com imagens do salvamento.

O diretor do hospital, Cel. Dr. Itzik Reis esclareceu que o centro de operações também tem auxiliado equipes médicas de outros países que estão incapacitadas de prover o tratamento necessário aos feridos. Hoje, nove voluntários americanos, de Los Angeles, se uniram à delegação israelense no hospital de campanha, além da colaboração permanente com as forças da ONU, incluindo o Brasil, e outras unidades de busca e salvamento presentes no Haiti. Israel continua fazendo tudo o que estiver ao seu alcance para ajudar o povo do Haiti após este trágico desastre. Na foto abaixo, um médico da IDF trata uma criança ferida em Porto Príncipe.
